Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter (or X, or whatever Elon decides to call it this week)... The list of platforms grows faster than my laundry pile. But here’s the thing: you don’t need to be everywhere. In fact, unless you have a clone or can survive on three hours of sleep (please share your secret), trying to dominate all social media platforms will only lead to you posting a meme about how tired you are. Irony at its finest.
Pick platforms that suit your business. If you’re selling artisanal cat sweaters, Pinterest and Instagram are your BFFs. If you’re a corporate ninja looking to connect with CEOs, LinkedIn is where you’ll find your tribe. Choose wisely, young padawan.
We all know content is king, but let’s face it, not all kings are exciting. No one wants to scroll through endless posts that scream, Buy my stuff! Imagine a royal decree that just said, “Give me your money!” How long do you think that kingdom would last?
Instead, create content that’s fun, engaging, and (most importantly) human. Show your personality, crack a joke, or share a behind-the-scenes fail. (Like that time you tried to film a product demo and your cat stole the spotlight—because let’s be real, people love cats more than products.)
Social media isn’t a one-way street where you scream into the void and hope someone hears you. Nope. You need to engage with your audience! Like their posts, reply to their comments, slide into their DMs (professionally, please). Think of it as having a conversation at a party, except without the awkward small talk about the weather.
But remember: don’t be that creepy person who likes 10-year-old posts or leaves generic Nice pic! comments on everything. Engage meaningfully, like a human who actually cares. (Or at least pretend to.)
We’ve all read those articles that say you need to post every single day if you want to be successful. These articles were written by robots, obviously. For us mere mortals, posting consistently is great, but you don’t need to post 10 times a day like you're in some social media Olympics.
The key is to post regularly enough that people remember you exist, but not so often that they wonder if you have a life outside of the internet. If you miss a day, don’t panic. No one’s sitting by their phone wondering why you didn’t post your Tuesday taco selfie.
Now, before you run away at the mention of analytics, hear me out. These tools are here to help, not confuse you with graphs and numbers that make your brain hurt. Check out what’s working—are people loving your sarcastic tweets or that video marketing of your dog wearing sunglasses? Double down on what’s resonating and ditch what isn’t.
But remember, social media is like high school: just because one post didn’t get a lot of likes doesn’t mean you’re a failure. It just means the algorithm was feeling moody that day.
If you’ve spent more than five minutes on social media, you know it’s a roller coaster of trends, memes, and challenges that pop up out of nowhere. (Looking at you, #IceBucketChallenge and #HarlemShake). Instead of stressing out about keeping up, embrace the chaos! Jump on trends when they make sense for your brand’s marketing, but don’t force it.
No one needs to see you awkwardly trying to do a TikTok dance unless your business is literally dance classes. Then, by all means, hit the woah.
Here’s a secret: people connect with realness. Yes, polished content is great, but don’t be afraid to show the messy side of things. Did you spill coffee on your laptop while drafting your next viral social media post? Share it. Is your office plant slowly dying and you have no idea why? Make a funny post about it.
Being human (and even a little weird) makes your brand relatable, and in a sea of perfectly curated feeds, that can be refreshing.
Building a strong online presence doesn’t happen overnight. It’s not like planting a magic bean that grows a beanstalk to instant social media fame. It’s more like planting a garden that needs watering, sunlight, and some “please don’t die” vibes.
Consistency, creativity, and engagement will eventually pay off. So, put in the work, be patient, and trust the process. Just don’t forget to have fun along the way. After all, social media is supposed to be social, right?
Building a strong online presence with social media marketing doesn’t have to be a stress-inducing marathon. It’s about finding your rhythm, staying human, and engaging with your audience in fun and meaningful ways. Oh, and maybe embracing a meme or two along the way. Now go out there, be awesome, and remember: your followers are only human too, probably scrolling in their pajamas just like you.
Thank you.
